Pike County is extending its deadline to request a hearing in response to new tax assessments and property record cards sent out recently.
You'll recall county officials sent out property record cards to more than 12 thousand residents after assessing home and property values for the first time in more than two decades.
In many cases the property assessments more than doubled and tripled in value.
Pike County Supervisor of Assessments Cindy Shaw says after the mailings, her office fielded more than 3,500 phone calls and office visits from concerned and confused taxpayers.
In fact 700 residents scheduled hearings to dispute items on their property record cards or their assessments.
The huge response prompted the Assessor's office to extend the deadline to schedule a hearing until next Monday, April 6.
If you have questions or concerns, call or visit the assessors office in the basement of the Pike County, Illinois courthouse.
You might recall the new property record cards and assessments were done to get Pike County back into compliance with state statutes.
The state requires assessments to be done every four years.
It had been more than 20 years since Pike County's last assessment.
