Representative Luetkemeyer pushing legislation
(Hannibal, Mo.) A piece of Northeast Missouri history could soon be circulating the country.
US Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer stopped in Hannibal Monday, April 6th to promote a Mark Twain commemorative coin legislation.
That legislation would create a $1 and a $5 coin that could generate revenue for museums around the country.
KHQA spoke with Representative Luetkemeyer about what this coin and its revenue would mean to the city of Hannibal and the Mark Twain legacy.
"Well these dollars can be used in many ways, theres no strings to it," said Luetkemeyer. "They can use it to enhance the exhibit here, they can use it to improve it, to add to it, whatever they want to do. Those dollars can be used to improve and commemorate the legacy of Mark Twain which is important not only to this area, but also our state and our country."
This legislation is currently in the Financial Services Committee of the House.
Once it gets through that committee it will go to the House floor, then to Senate and finally to the President.
Luetkeymer is hopeful this legislation can be completed by the end of summer.
The coin would then go on a waiting list of the US mint.
A rough estimate for release of the coin is 2013.
