QUINCY, IL -- Water and sewer rates are going up in the city of Quincy.

Aldermen gave first reading monday night to a pair of ordinances to increase water and sewer rates to offset higher treatment costs.

Water rates will go up 25 percent.

Sewer rates will climb 30 percent.

Utilities Director David Kent says water and sewer rates have not been increased since 2003.

Together, water and sewer operations are running about a one million dollar deficit.
