DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa will see $1.6 billion on road projects this year.
The projects for state, county and city road systems include federal economic stimulus money.
Dena Gray-Fisher of the Iowa Department of Transportation says work on roads and bridges maintained by the state will involve about $1 billion in spending. It includes $228 million in federal stimulus money.
She says cities and counties will get about $535 million from Iowa's road use tax fund and $128 million in federal money, as well as local road funds.
The federal money will help the transportation department reduce a backlog of maintenance work and advance other projects. Those include a four-lane bypass on U.S. Highway 61 around Fort Madison and the reconstruction of Interstate 29 in western Iowa.
