CHICAGO - Illinoisans whose unemployment benefits are about to run out can breathe a little easier.
A 13-week extension granted by the federal stimulus program kicks in this week for Illinois.
That will help those who have exhausted the 59 weeks of benefits offered by the state and federal governments.
But to get the extra benefits, unemployed workers have to show they've been looking for a job.
Those who are eligible will be notified through the mail and don't have to contact the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
The extension will be in effect through the end of the year.
