Recent distemper outbreak put a hold on adoptions
QUINCY, IL --
The Quincy Humane Society is back to full operations after a recent case of canine distemper virus.
Distemper is an incurable, often fatal canine disease that affects respiratory, gastrointestinal and central nervous systems.
The virus entered the shelter through a litter of puppies from Knox City, Missouri in late February.
You might recall earlier this month, the humane society put a hold on accepting and adopting out puppies and dogs until its risk assessments were complete.
Now, the coast is clear, clean and virus-free.
KHQA's Rajah Maples spoke with the volunteer coordinator at the Quincy Humane Society about how things are back to normal and how you can protect your pet from illness without having to spend a fortune.
The Quincy Humane Society wants to use its recent experience with canine distemper virus to remind pet owners about the importance of vaccinations.
Volunteer Coordinator Melody Seybold says, "It's very preventable with vaccinations, so we try to encourage everyone to get their animal vaccinated or spayed/neutered as soon as possible to avoid having diseases like that."
Because the cost of vaccinating and spaying or neutering your pet can add up financially, the shelter offers a high volume, high quality, low cost vaccination clinic and spay/neuter program. That means pet owners from throughout the region can be responsible without spending a fortune. Volunteer Coordinator Melody Seybold says you do not have to be a Quincy resident or low-income to participate. However, grant money is available for those who can't afford the low-cost of spay or neuter services.
Seybold says, "One male and one female cat can produce more than 420,000 kittens in six years."
And of course it takes money to operate the Quincy Humane Society's many programs and services. That's why the shelter is hosting its 2nd annual Garage Sale Fundraiser Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It'll take place in the Merkel's building at 17th and Spring in Quincy. If you'd like to donate items, you can drop them off this week at the Merkel's building between 3 and 7 p.m. now through Thursday.
The humane society also is conducting a Schwan's fund raiser.
You can order at the shelter on North 36th Street this week and pick up your items at the garage sale this Friday and Saturday.
Proceeds will benefit the Quincy Humane Society.
If you have questions, just call the shelter at 217-223-8786.
