Training for volunteers starts May 5
QUINCY, Ill. - The John Wood Community College Office of Literacy Services is seeking volunteers to serve as literacy tutors to adults who want to improve their basic reading or math skills or to adults who need to learn English as a second language.
A free tutor training workshop will be offered in Quincy starting May 5.
It will meet three Tuesday evenings - May 5, 12 and 19 - from 6-9 p.m. in Room D-147 (the GED classroom) of the Paul Heath Center on JWCC’s campus at 48th and Harrison in Quincy.
The training is conducted by JWCC's literacy staff.
It prepares volunteer tutors to work one-on-one with adults who lack basic skills.
Upon completion of the training, each tutor will be matched with an adult needing tutoring.
The pair will work for two hours each week at a time and place convenient for both.
Volunteer tutors must be 18 years of age or older and must have a high school diploma or GED diploma.
They do not need any prior teaching experience or formal background in education, but they need to be sensitive to the needs of adult learners and possess a strong interest in reading.
Literacy staff tests students, provides all instructional materials, and assists in lesson planning.
To register for the tutor training or to get more information, contact the JWCC Literacy Services office at (217) 641-4951.
