Severe weather spurs sales, need for devices
If you're looking to protect your family from severe weather at home, you might want to get your hands on a weather radio.
The special radio will sound an alarm if a severe weather alert is triggered in your area, and you can program the device for specific counties.
John Simon with Adams County Emergency Management saidhaving a weather radio is important going into this time of year.
"If you're sleeping at 2 o'clock in the morning and a tornado's coming through your neighborhood, how are you going to find out if the TV's not on in order to take those steps of going into the basement or seeking shelter? A weather radio is a very important tool that you could have in your home," Simon said.
KHQAchecked in with retailers in the Tri-States that carry weather radios.
The RadioShacks in Quincy and Hannibal were sold out, and the RadioShack in Keokuk only had one weather radio in stock.
Matt McAneny with the Quincy RadioShack saidthis time of year the store usually sells out of weather radios as soon as they hit the shelves.
"It blows up this time of year pretty good to the point where you find people ordering them straight from the warehouse. I had a customer come in a few days ago and order five of them," McAneny said.
He said customers can order weather radios at the store, and RadioShack will ship the product directly to your home free of charge.
