Lee County, Ia. - The law allowing same-sex marriage in the Hawkeye state went into effect Monday, April 27.

On Thursday, Lee County saw its first such union in Keokuk.

Roger Bullard Jr. and his 20-year partner, Hootie took their marriage vows in the Lee County Courthouse.

They say they never thought they'd see gay marriage allowed in Iowa.

Hootie Bullard said, "This is a big step for civil rights for everyone."

Roger Bullard Jr. said, "We are doing this because we truly love each other. We've been together twenty years and we feel we deserve this."

The couple plans to celebrate with a big wedding reception in July.
