BURLINGTON, IOWA (AP) -- Heavy rain has washed away a yard and destroyed a retaining wall in Burlington.

The city received more than 2 inches of rain early Thursday.

When Gene DelPreore walked outside his home Thursday morning, he discovered half his backyard was gone.

DelPreore's house is on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. He says a 20-by-10 foot section of his yard washed away and landed below the cliff near some railroad tracks

Another resident, Cindy Strong, says the rain crumbled a 20-foot-long retaining wall across her front yard. She says all that is left is mess of mud and landscaping blocks.
