(AP) -- CARBONDALE, Ill. - Trustees at Southern Illinois University have approved a 4.5 percent tuition increase for incoming Carbondale students and a 6 percent increase for students attending SIU's Edwardsville campus.

The Southern Illinois University Board Thursday unanimously passed the tuition increases while also upping eight fees for green initiatives and health care, among much else. Another three fee increases covering athletics and recreation were opposed by two student trustees.

Also Thursday, trustees voted to tighten ethics laws barring board members from voting on items in which they have a personal interest. Legal Counsel Jerry Blakemore says the new policy provides full disclosure to the public.
