Area women get confidence boost they need
Quincy, Ill.- Tara Smith is an unemployed single mother of 6. Thanks to the YWCA's Dress for Success Event, she's able to get the tools she needs to a better life. She and other women were treated to makeovers. Ladies got their hair cut and styled, and make up tips. After that they picked out business casual outfits at Dress Barn in the mall. For that Smith is grateful.Tara Smith says," It's wonderful. A blessing. It has done more wonders that I've ever had done."
The event is part of the YWCA's Supportive Housing Program, which helps single, homeless mothers. The event was designed to help boost self-esteem and promote economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing special attire. The women learned the basics of proper dress and other helpful tips on how to present themselves in the best possible way during job interviews.
YWCA Case Manager Bonnie Garkie says," Some are graduating from college. They're going to be in the field looking for a job and so we're helping then with what to wear, what looks good on them, what's professional. Because a lot of women have never had a day like this."
Saturday's event was not just about giving these ladies a new look on the outside, but about giving them a transformation on the inside, and a lasting confidence. Something Tara Smith says she now has.
"It helps you get on your feet and go day to day knowing you're able to do it," Smith says.
The owner of Salon 835 provided free hair and makeup tips with the help of her staff. The ladies were also picked out shoes from Payless to complete their ensembles.
