Courts taped in downtown Quincy
QUINCY, ILL. -- Quincy Exchange Club members were up early Sunday morning preparing for the Gus Macker Tournament next weekend.Members measured distances and used lots of tape to mark the 41 courts used in the tournament around Washington Park.
Gus Macker Co-Chairman Doug Greenwell told us registration is slightly down, but the Exchange Club expected lower numbers this year because of the economy.
He says overall, the numbers are right where they need to be. But the club can use more help behind the scenes.
"Our biggest push is to find busters, which are the referees for the courts. We are down on Gus Busters this year. That's probably the biggest need we have, so if anyone out there has any basketball experience or even likes the game and doesn't know that much, we'd really entertain having them help us this year," Greenwell said.
If you're interested in becoming a Gus Buster, contact Kevin Curran at (217) 223-1063.
KHQA Executive News Director spoke with Curran during KHQA's News at 5 on Monday, May 18.
He told her every Buster receives:
1. Brand-new pair of basketball shoes
2. The official Macker jacket
3. Two Macker T-shirts
4. Macker shorts
5. Macker hat
6. Fanny pack
7. Whistle
8. Free food and drinks the entire weekend
Curran also encourages Busters to sign up with a frend so they can work together on the same court.
It helps if Busters know at least a little abnout the game of basketball, but there is a mandatory Buster training meeting on Friday, May 22.
At that time, Busters will get their gear and receive a few tips on handling a court.
Former Macker players are especially encouraged to volunteer as Gus Busters.
