Different eras of war portrayed

Ft. Madison, Ia.--  People could grasp history at their finger tips.

Since the beginning of May people could view war displays at the Old Fort Madison along the riverfront.  Authentic uniforms and weapons were on display from just about every era of war.

From the 1760's, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, Civil War up to the Iraq War.  The items even included an authentic captured Nazi flag.  The items were donated by veteran's families, private collectors and the Lee County Historical Society.

Site manager Eugene Watkins says not only does the display honor veterans, but really captures the different eras of war.

"The importance here is that you get to see American history live. The uniform, the equipment isn't something you get to see when you're reading about it, so it kind of brings history to life," said Old Ft. Madison Site Manager Eugene Watkins.

A ceremony was also held.  The names of more than a dozen soldiers who were killed fighting were read.  Their bodies are believed to be buried somewhere near the original site of the fort.
