New negotiations planned for Monday
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Attempts to raise Illinois income taxes to fill a historic deficit flopped Sunday. Lawmakers are preparing to adjourn without passing a complete state budget, a step that could trigger massive cuts in government services.
Governor Pat Quinn says he and legislative leaders will meet tomorrow and launch new negotiations, this time with Republicans at the table.
The income tax rate is now 3% The legislation would have raised it to 4.5% for two years. That would have generated about $4.5 billion for state government. Supporters say the increase was necessary to reduce the worst budget deficit in Illinois history.
They say that without the additional money, vital state services will have to be slashed dramatically.
