Competing sites debate merits of gross receipts tax
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Governor Rod Blagojevich and the Illinois business community are escalating their feud over taxes.
Business groups are running a new television ad opposing the governor's call for a new $6 billion business tax. The ad argues the tax will end up hitting consumers and forcing jobs out of Illinois.
They've also set up a Web site called largesttaxincreaseever.com
The Democratic governor says the groups are distorting his proposal. Blagojevich argued Tuesday that his plan would help communities by investing money in education and health care.
He also disputes the claim that his "gross receipts tax" would kill jobs. He says the tax is structured to minimize that problem. Blagojevich has set up his own Web site to promote the tax --illinois.gov/-taxfairness.
The debate comes to Quincy Tuesday night with a representative meeting with local businesses at the Oakley-Lindsay Center. We'll have more details on the evening news.
