Governor's staff meets with concerned local business leaders

QUINCY, IL -- Small business owners in Quincy say a proposed tax isn't fair, and that you'll be the one paying for it.

KHQA has been following the local outrage over Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich's gross receipts tax. Basically, the governor wants to tax total sales of businesses that have more than $1 million in annual sales.

Tuesday, staff members from the governor's office came to town to talk with Quincy business owners.

The office asked us not to bring cameras or microphones into that meeting, because they felt that would inhibit some business owners from speaking up. However, we were able to talk with a spokesperson for the governor's office about the meeting and get feedback from Quincy business owners afterward.

Spokesperson Becky Carroll says she plans to take everyone's concerns back to the governor's office, where they're still working on finalizing the bill.
