Proposal would extend students' health coverage under parents

MACOMB, IL -- The director of the Illinois Public Health department touted Governor Blagojevich's Illinois Covered Plan to a new crowd Tuesday.

Dr. Eric Whitaker addressed students at Western Illinois University.

Most of the 1.4 million Illinois adults without health insurance are 18 to 24 years old. Under the proposed plan, young adults could stay on their parent's health plan until they turn 29.

Whitaker helped Blagojevich form Illinois Covered. He asked the students support the plan by writing to their legislators.

"If you look at change in history," Dr Whitaker said. "Students have been at the forefront and we're excited to get students around the issues of healthcare and education."
