UNDATED (AP) - Illinois peach growers say the recent stretch of subfreezing temperatures could make this season's crops the pits.
Just ask Tom Schwartz. He says that after inspecting his 10 acres of peaches near Centralia, he's found many of the fledgling fruit already dead.
Growers throughout Illinois and the nation are worried that the prolonged April freeze lately wreaked havoc on fruit crops, specifically peaches.
Any substantial losses could translate into higher prices at grocery stores and farmer's markets, something observers say isn't likely to shake out for some time yet.
