Researchers are finding out more on cancer
Another person connected to Washington politics is dealing with cancer. Former Tennessee senator and actor Fred Thompson revealed he has lymphoma. Thompson was diagnosed two years ago. The 64-year-old says the disease is in remission and will not affect his decision on whether or not to run for president.
A bill to ease restrictions on federally funded embryonic stem cell research will be on the way to the White House soon. The Senate passed the legislation Wednesday and the House has already passed a similar measure. President Bush vetoed a stem cell bill last year--and has promised to do the same this time around.
Genetics are giving doctors a better understanding of how cancer works. A new study has identified genes that play a role in the spread of breast cancer. Researchers have also discovered genes that can hamper the effect of chemotherapy. It's hoped the finding will one day lead to more effective treatments.
