CHICAGO (AP) - A Springfield-based Illinois Army National Guard unit has headed off to Iraq.
Around 20 soldiers from the 139th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment recently completed their mobilization training at Fort Dix, N.J., and left this week for Iraq.
Their main mission will be to produce a weekly newspaper and bimonthly news broadcasts about the situation in Iraq.
Members of the unit will also help escort civilian reporters and government officials around when they visit the area.
At a July 20 ceremony at Fort Dix, officers put up a yellow-ribbon banner in honor of the unit.
It will stay up until the soldiers return to the United States from their yearlong deployment.
