SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois' Capital City is playing host to the 2009 World Horseshoe Tournament, and about 1,300 competitors are trying to ring their way to the top.
The Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield is filled with constant clanging of horseshoes.
Paul Stewart is the President of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association, and he says the sport has very devoted followers.
George Corson of Florida brings his daughter and son-in-law to the annual contest, which is held in different cities around the country.
Corson says he started pitching on a regular basis after he retired as a pastime and a way to get some exercise.
Corson competes in the "elderly" category and admits he's getting fewer "ringers" these days.
The tournament began Monday and continues through Aug. 8.
