NEW YORK (AP) — The final standing steel column removed from ground zero after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is returning to the site after more than seven years in storage.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the beam will be taken back to the World Trade Center site early Monday.
The column weighs nearly 60 tons and is almost 40 feet tall. It will become part of the planned National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum.
Dubbed the "Last Column," it became a makeshift memorial adorned with firehouse patches, police logos and union stickers.
It's currently in a hangar at Kennedy Airport.
