IOWA CITY, IOWA. (AP) -- The Iowa City Council plans a special session to discuss the possibility of a curfew for the city's younger residents.

Under the proposal to be discussed Sept. 10, children under the age of 13 would have to be off the streets by 10 p.m. Fourteen- and 15-year-olds would have to in by 11 p.m., and 16- and 17-year-olds would have until midnight.

The year-round curfews would run until 5 a.m. each day and would give police the authority to make sure children are in their homes after the designated hours, unless they are accompanied by a responsible adult.

City attorney Eleanor Dilkes submitted a draft of the ordinance to the city council this week in light of growing unease from some southeast-side residents over juvenile crime and nuisance behavior.
