Still several challenges ahead for city
The Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department is working to extend the city's trail system.
HANNIBAL, MISSOURI --
Right now the department is trying to work out the logistics for completing the trail so that it circles the entire city.
The biggest obstacle to that process are the city's major highways.
The department is trying to figure out how to get the trail users from Warren Barrett Drive across Highway 61 safely.
The department also wants to connect the trail from the north end of Veterans Road to Route W and then on up to Riverview Park.
There is no cost estimate on the project because everything depends on the funding available at the time.
Despite the challenges, Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department director Chris Atkinson says that completing the trail system will be a big plus to life in the city.
There is no set timeline to complete the project right now.
Atkinson says it may take several years to complete the trail system circle around the city.
