Quincy's Hydro project is getting national attention.
The Upper Mississippi River Conference which is devoted to environmental issues around the river is featuring a session on the Hydropower project at Quincy's lock and Dam 21.
Mike Klingner with Klingner and Associates is a special speaker on the program.
He says Quincy's plant...which the city council just approved bonds for last week, is unlike any other plant in the country.
New technology will make the plant more environmentally friendly...and safe for fish traveling down river.
Klingner said, "The blades turn at a low speed like a wind turbine and at that low speed we're able to have fish and eels go through. It protects the habitat more than the conventional techonology."
Speaking of the hydro plant....the city is currently applying for grant money through the Internal Revenue Service which would provide for up to 30 percent of the cost of the facility in lieu of tax credits.
The cost of the total project is estimated at 81 million dollars
