QUINCY, ILL. -- The Quincy City Council heard the first reading of an ordinance that would make a change in the city's regulation of taxi and limousine service.
The proposed amendment would define "for hire."
That could have an effect on the Courtesy Rides service offered by Jonathan Schoenakase.
You can call him if you feel you've had too much to drink and need a ride home at no charge.
Schoenakase addressed the council, asking that if the amendment passes, he be grandfathered in and allowed to continue to operate.
His attorney Ryan Schnack said he believed the change was too broad and could be applied even to a person who offers a one-time ride to a friend, who then gives money for gas.
Alderman Dan Brink says it is his obligation to protect citizens.
That includes making sure operations like courtesy rides are accountable.
James Meredith, owner of diamond cab, also addressed the council and said he wants to see everyone playing by the same rules.
The ordinance will have two more readings before it's voted on.
