DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- About a dozen high school students ignored the noise of construction equipment and the stares of classmates to gather around the Urbandale High School flag pole to pray for their school, family and friends.

It was all part of national "See You at the Pole" prayer demonstration for students of Christian faith. Similar prayer circles took place Wednesday at other Iowa high schools. Last year more than 3 million students from all 50 states participated in the event.

The student-initiated event started in Burleson, Texas in 1990. Sixteen-year-old Rori Johnson of Urbandale says he participated because he wanted to support his faith.

Students took turns praying and later made prayer requests for specific friends and family members who were suffering from a variety of ailments.
