DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- A soldier born in Iowa has died in a bomb attack in the Philippines blamed on al-Qaida-linked militants.
The Defense Department says 26-year-old Staff Sgt. Jack M. Martin III and another soldier, Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Shaw of Markham, Ill., were killed on Tuesday.
The public affairs office for the U.S. Army Special Forces says Martin, of Bethany, Okla., was born in Maquoketa and grew up in Iowa and Oklahoma.
Maj. Bradley Gordon says the soldiers were part of a task force deployed to help quell militants in the southern Philippines.
Martin and Shaw were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, in Fort Lewis, Wash.
