COLUMBIA, ILL. (AP) -- The attorney for a family suing their school district in hopes of allowing their autistic son to bring his service dog to school is welcoming the backing of the state's attorney general.
Lisa Madigan has filed papers with the Mount Vernon-based 5th District Appellate Court in support of Chris and Melissa Kalbfleisch (KAHLB'-flysh).
A Monroe County judge has entered a preliminary injunction to let 5-year-old Carter Kalbfleisch bring his dog into his elementary school in Columbia - something the district says would harm at least one other student allergic to animals.
Clay St. Clair, the Kalbfleishes' attorney, says Madigan's office apparently interprets the state statute similarly to his clients.
An attorney for Columbia schools says she expected Madigan's office to eventually weigh in.
