DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- A Des Moines police officer who responded to a fight is hospitalized after authorities say he was run over by a pickup truck.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Lori Lavorato says when Officer Nick Lloyd arrived at an apartment complex Sunday afternoon, the truck driver was trying to leave and stopped in front of his squad car.

Lloyd got out of the car and the truck driver accelerated and hit the squad car head-on.

Lavorato says Lloyd was knocked to the ground.

The truck driver hit the squad car again, then backed up, running over the officer.

Lloyd, who suffered a broken pelvis, was flown to a hospital in Omaha, Neb.

The truck driver, Elvin Redmond, tried to flee, but lost control of the truck and hit a tree.

Charges are pending.
