DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Former Republican Gov. Terry Branstad is expected to file papers creating a campaign committee for governor.
The Des Moines Register in a copyright story on Wednesday reports longtime Branstad associate Richard Schwarm says Branstad plans to open a candidate organization with the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board. By filing the statement, Branstad can begin raising and spending money toward a campaign.
Six other Republicans have filed organizational committees to run for governor in 2010.
Democratic Gov. Chet Culver is up for re-election next year.
Schwarm, who plans to file the papers on Wednesday, says it should not be interpreted as a definitive sign that Branstad is committed to running.
Branstad spent 16 years at the state's helm before stepping down in 1998.
