DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa is for a bit of winter in early fall with a hard freeze and light snow in the forecast this weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for Friday night for northern and east central Iowa with a frost advisory for southeast Iowa. Overnight lows are expected to drop into the mid 20s to mid 30s.

A freeze watch has been issued for Saturday night for southern Iowa.

The weather service says Iowa notched its first freeze this fall on Sept. 30 at the Harlan airport.

State climatologist Harry Hillaker says a hard freeze can damage plants, including corn and soybeans.

The weather service also has issued its first forecast for snow for Friday night for northwest Iowa.
