BURLINGTON, IOWA (AP) -- A nearly 114-year-old bridge in Burlington has been closed to pedestrians due to fears it couldn't support their weight or could even collapse.
Workers on Wednesday placed 4-foot-tall snow fences across the south and north entrances to the Cascade Bridge. Public Works Director Ron Knoke acknowledges people could climb over the fence but says it's the best the city could do without incurring a big expense.
Vehicle traffic earlier was blocked over the bridge after a 2008 inspection showed it was extremely deteriorated. An engineering firm later found that the bridge might not be structurally able to support pedestrians or even its own weight.
