SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- State officials have awarded about $200,000 in grants for snowmobile trails statewide.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has given the grants to nine local governments and an Illinois snowmobile association.

The money is to be used for trail maintenance, equipment and safety improvement.

The department's director Marc Miller says snowmobiling is enjoyed by thousands of people and the money will help keep them safe.

There are nearly 38,000 registered snowmobiles in Illinois.
