DATELINE, IOWA (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin is giving advice to follow Democrat Gov. Chet Culver on how to handle the ups and downs of Iowa's collegiate sports teams.

Culver has received criticism for congratulating the University of Iowa Hawkeyes for going 8-0 for the first time in school history and failing to acknowledge Iowa State's first win on Nebraska's home turf since 1977.

During Thursday's conference call with reporters, Harkin called Culver's omission "one of those minor little slip-ups."

Harkin says all Iowans are proud of the state's teams.

He says the performances of the Hawkeyes and the Cyclones on Saturday are nice things to savor.

As for congratulating the winners and consoling the losers, Harkin said that applies only "if the losers are from Iowa."

Harkin says if the losers are not Iowans then "the heck with them."
