QUINCY, ILL. -- The Kroc Center has moved one step closer to reality in Quincy.

During a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday morning, a billboard was unveiled to show what the community center, which will be run by the Salvation Army, will look like.

The facility will be about 90,000 square feet with a performing arts center, an aquatic center, and a 600-seat theatre.

Carol Seiler, a midwest territory coordinator for the Salvation Army told KHQA several factors came together to make Quincy and the local Salvation Army ideal for the center.

"They had community support around them. There was a fundraising requirement and they had that already in place with the hometown endowment. Then there was a solid local team and tremendous advisory board support, local community volunteer support. So they made a good team."

The Kroc Center will be built on the site of the old Salvation Army building between Broadway and Vermont from 4th to 5th Streets in downtown Quincy.

Construction will take about 1 1/2 years.
