WATERLOO, IOWA (AP) -- A runoff election will be required to determine the winner of the Waterloo mayoral race.

The runoff will be held Dec. 1 because none of the candidates in Tuesday's election won a majority of the vote. The candidates will be city council member Steve Schmitt and former city council member Buck Clark.

The third candidate in Tuesday's race, city council member Reggie Schmitt, was eliminated.

Unofficial results Tuesday night showed Clark with 4,132 votes, or 43.5 percent of the total, and Steve Schmitt with 3,140 votes, or 33 percent. Reggie Schmitt trailed with 2,199 votes, or 23 percent.

The three-way race began when incumbent Mayor Tim Hurley announced that he would not seek a fourth two-year term.
