QUINCY, ILL. -- Classes weren't in session, but that didn't stop transportation employees with Quincy Public Schools from working to spread a little holiday cheer.

It's all part of the "Make a Merry Christmas" charitable program.

It started 9 years ago when bus drivers, mechanics and transportation staff from around the district began donating money, time, food and presents.......all in an effort to make the holidays brighter for some of the students they take to school every day and their families.

This was the first year to use entertainment to raise funds.

In the past they've held garage sales and other events throughout the year.

Event organizers told me what they do is hard work, but it's all worth it to see a family in need happy on Christmas Day.

"It's important just watching them when we come to their house their big smile...crying," said Jony Shaw, co-organizer.

A lot of musicians like me, myself we take the time to come out. It's for a great cause makes lots of money makes lots of kids very happy to have a Christmas that they probably wouldn't have," said Tamira Vahle, QPS bus driver.

Several bands and comedians entertained the crowd today...the highlight may have been though when both Superintendent Lonny Lemon and QPD Board President Bud Niekamp got a pie in the face.

QPS transportation staff plan to provide three families each with Christmas gifts and Christmas Dinner thanks to donations through Make a Merry Christmas program.
