Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin says the Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded the state $1.56 million for flood recovery efforts in Cedar Falls.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) -- According to Harkin, the FEMA funds will be used by Cedar Falls officials to acquire flooded areas that will be converted into green space.
Twelve commercial parcels, including 10 structures that have been substantially damaged, and two vacant lots will be acquired with the funds.
In making the announcement Tuesday, Harkin said steady progress has been made in repairing the damage caused by the worst natural disaster the state has ever seen.
The June 2008 flood caused billions of dollars in damage, ranking it among the top five natural disasters in U.S. History.
