Baldwin students shop for area children
QUINCY, ILL. -- Christmas is a few weeks away.
Unfortunately, some kids may not get what they want or need for Christmas. That's why a few area students want to brighten up the holidays for other kids. 4th, 5th and 6th grade students from the Talented and Gifted program at Baldwin school went shopping at Wal-mart Friday to pick out gifts.
The students raised more than $1,300 to adopt Christmas Angels from the Salvation Army Christmas tree. This is the second year for the service project. It's a fun event for the students, but they also learn life-long lessons.
"Everybody deserves a good Christmas," said 5th grader Michael Don.
"Giving is better than receiving and everybody loves your help at the Salvation Army if you can help," said 6th grader Antonio Fernandez.
"I am here shopping because we want to make other people's lives happy and we want everybody to have a very Merry Christmas," said 4th grader Wesley Cook.
Last year, students raised $750. They did everything they could to raise more this year by saving spare change, even donating their allowances.
