Residents in need get help from Salvation Army
QUINCY, ILL. -- Hundreds of Quincy residents poured into the Salvation Army grateful for help this holiday season.
Families were given a food basket filled with fruit and vegetables even turkeys were handed out for a holiday meal. Families were also able to pick out one used toy, one new toy, a book and a stuffed animal for each child. The Salvation army expect almost 1,000 families to come through its doors, and that's more than ever before.
"This year, the demand has been greater than in previous years due to the local economy," siad Mayor Alan Wurtz with the Quincy Salvation Army.
Because of the economic strain, getting by has been hard for families like Cynthia Uhland. Her legs were shattered in a bad car accident five years. She says with two small kids, it can be tough to provide.
"I can't afford to give my kids the Christmas I want them to have and this helps out with being able to bring them the joy of Santa and giving into their lives,"Uhland said.
Uhland says that one thing she's sure of, is that things always work themselves out. She says she's grateful for her kids, her life and her health and most importantly, organizations like the Salvation Army who are helpful in times of need.
"They know the important thing is Jesus. It makes my heart so happy and proud to know I live in a town that will help me and help other people who need help this Christmas year," said Uhland.
Angel Tree gifts and food baskets will also be given to families Thursday from 9am to 1pm. If your family is in need, call the Salvation Army at (217) 222-2087.
