CHICAGO, ILL. (AP) -- It's easy to overeat during the holidays. But Venita James, a dietitian at Fantus Health Center in Chicago, has some tips.

She says never go to a party hungry.

Have a healthy breakfast and a light snack during the day.

Avoid sampling all the appetizers.

Eat small portions and include carbohydrates, protein and vegetables.

If you go back for seconds, go for the vegetables.

Avoid fried items and remove the skin from chicken or turkey.

Go for the fruit instead of the high calorie desserts.

Drink water instead of soft drinks or alcohol.

Remember to eat slowly and enjoy the food.

The Fantus Health Center is one of the 16 Ambulatory and Community Health Network (ACHN) health centers within the Cook County Health and Hospitals System.
