Changes sought in Iowa's grandparent rights laws

(AP) -- DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Advocates for change to the parental visitation law say Iowa lawmakers can do a better job allowing grandparents to visit their grandchildren.

They're gearing up for a fight when the legislative session begins on Jan. 11.  Under current law, grandparents can only obtain the right to visit if they can prove the custodial parent is unfit to decide who can visit the children.

Grandparents Rights Organization founder Richard Victor says Iowa law is more strict than the courts require, and says the U.S. Supreme Court never intended state laws to be so stringent. Waverly lawyer Gary Boveia says the courts haven't said what "unfit" means, but says the grandparents must show that the parents are nearly negligent.
