Tax commission proposing 30% increase
The Missouri State Tax Commission wants to increase taxes on some of the best farmland across the state.
MIssouri Representative Brian Munzlinger (R - 1st Dist.) says the commission proposed raising taxes by 30% on Class 1-4 farm land.
That is normally the most productive land throughout the state.
Munzlinger says the tax is based on the fact that farmers are producing more than ever, but says that has nothing to do with the value of the land.
"What we've done over the last few decades is increase technology. Technologies in breeding seeds, in bio-tech, being able to be more efficient with our inputs, but we're paying for all those technologies and all those inputs. It's aside from our land values and evaluations, it should be totally something separate," said Munzlinger.
The proposed legislation would also decrease taxes on Class 5-7 farm land and there would be no change on Class 8 farm land.
Representative Munzlinger says he is drafting a resolution to stop this legislation that will be filed when the upcoming session begins.
