Staying patient, calm and slowing down is important
QUINCY, IL -- All of this light, fluffy snow mixed with strong winds equal dangerous road conditions for drivers.
Temperatures should drop below zero for the next several days...so all of that snow and ice won't melt any time soon, and clearing streets and highways completely will be an even greater challenge.
Even before you leave your driveway, it's important to clear all the snow off your car.
That includes the front of your car, back of your car and the mirrors.
Once out on the road, be patient.
Avoid passing, changing lanes, crossing traffic and don't follow too closely.
Reduce distractions while driving, like your cell phone.
This type of weather demands your full attention.
Get off the road if you're having trouble seeing because of snow glare or blowing snow.
Pull off to a safe parking area if possible.
If you become stuck or stranded, stay in your car to keep warm until help arrives.
Slightly open a window for ventilation, run your engine sparingly and use your emergency flashers.
And SLOW DOWN. That protects you and other drivers around you
It's also a great idea to keep a list of emergency numbers in your car.
That list should include family, friends and road condition numbers.
And don't forget your emergency kit, including blankets, food and extra clothing.
