DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- The Iowa Department of Transportation says frigid temperatures, strong northwesterly winds and blowing snow are making for dangerous road conditions.
The department said late Thursday that travel was not advised in all of western Iowa, counties along the Interstate Highway 35 corridor, and parts of east-central and northeast Iowa.
Snowplows in northwest Iowa were pulled from most roads at dusk Thursday, and the DOT warned motorists of a severe threat to human life if their vehicles become stranded.
The major storm that socked the state Thursday has also forced the cancellation of school in districts across the state, including the Des Moines Public Schools.
