HANNIBAL, MO -- Updated Jan. 18, 2009 at 5:30 p.m.

We now know more about both the suspect and the victim of the Hannibal murder that happened over the weekend.

Forty-four-year-old Allen Layfield of Hannibal was charged with second-degree murder in the death of 42-year-old Hannibal resident Karen Sherman.

She is formerly of Davenport, Iowa.

The crime happened here at 706 Birch Street.

Marion County Coroner Peggy Porter told the Hannibal Courier Post that Sherman apparently died of an assault that resulted from a domestic dispute.

Layfield is in the Marion County Jail $1 million cash-only bond.

Records show Layfield had been in trouble before. In 2005, he pleaded guilty to being a persistent driving while intoxicated offender and was put on supervised probation.

In April 2008, the Marion County Sheriff¹s Department listed him on its "most wanted" fugitive list for a third drunk driving offense.

Last October, a co-habitant of Layfield¹s was granted an order of protection against him.

The victim, who was a truck driver, was born in Hannibal and had many relatives locally, including her parents, two brothers and a sister.

The James O¹Donnell Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
