DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa is under the guns of an ice storm that's closing schools, creating dangerous driving conditions and power outages.

The National Weather Service on Wednesday says freezing rain of up to a-half inch has fallen across central and western Iowa allowing for ice to build up on roads, power lines and trees.

Iowa's two main power companies say thousands of customers were without power Wednesday morning.

MidAmerican Energy had about 2,500 customers without power, with most in the Sioux City and Des Moines area. Alliant Energy reported outages in northwest Iowa, central and southern Iowa.

In southwest Iowa, numerous power lines are down in Atlantic. In Gray, power lines are sagging onto highways.

An ice storm warning remains in effect into Wednesday night.
