WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Tom Harkin says about $5.9 million in recovery act funds will be coming to Iowa Workforce Development to train people for jobs in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries.

According to the Iowa Democrat, the grant will help the unemployed learn the technical and occupational skills necessary to obtain industry recognized credentials.

Harkin noted Wednesday that the renewable energy industry is creating good jobs in Iowa. He say the funding will be used to teach people the skills necessary to take advantage of the growing sector.

Harkin says in addition to creating jobs, the renewable energy sector is bringing down energy costs, reducing reliance on foreign fuels and helping prevent global climate change.
